MERS/Goodwill & St. Louis Rams Team Up For Donations

The St. Louis Rams are offering Goodwill donors across the St. Louis region the chance to win one of 12 prize packages
Donating clothing and household items to Goodwill around the holiday season is such a great tradition, but this year, the experience may be more rewarding than ever. Donors have the chance to win one of 11 ultimate prize packages from the St. Louis Rams for tickets and merchandise, and one grand prize for a VIP away-game trip in the 2009 NFL season! The grand prize includes a trip for two to an away game of the Rams' choice, roundtrip airfare on the team charter, dinner with Rams executives, overnight stay in the team hotel, game tickets and airport transportation.
Goodwill has set a goal of 150,000 donations by the end of the year, and the St. Louis Rams have joined in its efforts to meet that goal. During the registration time period from now through December 31, 2008, those who bring donations into St. Louis area Goodwill donation centers will receive a form to enter the sweepstakes. Participants can register one entry per donation trip, but can come back to repeat the process as often as they like. Winners will be drawn on January 9, 2009. And in a special appearance from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, visitors to the new Goodwill location at Clayton and Baxter roads in Chesterfield, MO, will have the chance meet Rams players Donnie Jones and Corey Chavous, plus two Rams cheerleaders, and have the chance to win tickets for the 2008 season! Goodwill Worker Finds $7,500 First Day on the Job.
Company Hopes to Locate Rightful Owner.

Glen Carbon, Ill. /St. Louis, Mo. (Monday, November 10, 2008)-On her first day of a new job and after just two months in the United States, Teodora Petrova uncovered a stack of large bills bundled in a donation at the Goodwill Store in Glen Carbon, Ill.
Petrova, just arriving in the area from Bulgaria, found the money totaling $7,500 while processing bins of donated shoes. She turned the money over to her manager who, in turn, notified the company executives before placing the cash away for safe keeping. The donation probably came in the last day or two.
“We are of course eager to find the rightful owner,” says Lewis C. Chartock, president and CEO of MERS/Goodwill. “Our donors are very important to us, and if this money was not intended as a donation we want to be sure it is returned.” Several times in the past, money or items important to a family have come in by mistake. Chartock adds, “It is not always easy to locate the donor because as many as fifty percent of donors do not ask for a receipt.”
Store manager Cissy Altevogt feels in a circumstance like this, a donor may have gone through items from a parent or grandparent and did not see it among the shoes. “Right now we suspect the person leaving the donation did not realize the money was there.”
Every year, Goodwill provides job placement services to more than 10,000 individuals in the community who have difficulty finding jobs due to physical, emotional, economic or scholastic conditions. If the owner is not found, it will go directly to help put those clients to work.
“What an exciting first day for Teodora,” says Altevogt. “She was doing such a nice job even for being brand new and then to have something like this come up.”
And as for the processor, Potrova had quite a “first day at work” story to tell her family back home.

Diane Katzman Launches New Line Tailored for Goodwill
MERS/Goodwill is proud to announce the introduction of a line of Diane Katzman jewelry in select Goodwill stores across the bi-state region. Katzman has created the “diane k.” collection to be sold in nine Goodwill Stores.

St. Louis based, Diane Katzman Design is well-recognized nationally in the finest stores and specialty shops. Women familiar with high-end jewelry designers are well acquainted with her pieces in stones and precious metals, which include necklaces, bracelets and earrings sold under her name. The “diane k.” collection includes one-of-a-kinds and vintage pieces.

A Goodwill shopper herself, Katzman says, “I have always loved the ‘treasures’ I find when I shop at the Goodwill stores. I hope you will share my thrill of the ‘find’ when you purchase new “diane k.” pieces at select Goodwill stores. Besides buying beautiful new jewelry at bargain prices, you'll know your purchase is enabling MERS/Goodwill to help people find jobs and to live independently in our community.”

Goodwill too is extremely pleased with the new enterprise. “We think this speaks volumes about the goodness of Diane,” says Lew Chartock, President and CEO. “Her commitment to assisting non-profits goes back years. As her company grew, so did her contribution. However, we are overjoyed that she selected us and saw fit to benefit Goodwill in such a big way.” Even the concept of selecting vintage or one-of-a kind pieces fits perfectly with the Goodwill brand.
